Instructions tell us how to do or make something. In this unit you will study how instructions are written. You will also see how they are sometimes just a part of a longer text. At the end of the unit you will plan, draft and write a set of instructions

EXERCISES

1) COMPREHENSION.Open your book on page 19 and read the text 'GOURD ORNAMENTAL'.

2) VOCABULARY. Using the dictionary you have in the blog, look up these words and write down in your notebook.
Draft, measurement, edible, sow (v), resemble, propagator, moist, ramble, trellis, fence, hint, wax, varnish and germination.

3) INSTRUCTIONS. Answer these questions about the text in your notebook. It's not necessary to copy them.

1) What is the purpose of this text? Does it have more than one purpose?
2) Which part is the instruction?
3) Why is there a description/photograph of the plants?
4) Why are there details of when to plant?
5) Why are details of temperature and height given in two different measurements?
6) Where are materials and tools mentioned?

Main verbs and auxiliary verbs

After careful drying, fruits can be waxed or varnished for table decoration.

'Can be varnished' is a verb phrase which is made up of a main verb ('varnish') and two auxiliary verbs ('can', 'be').

Look at this list:

The list has been punctuated using a colon (:), bullet points (.), commas (,) and a full stop. The colon marks the start of the list, the bullet points draw attention to each item in the list, the commas separate items in a list, and the full
stop marks the end.

EXERCISES (Notebook)

1) Change the following sentence lists into bullet-pointed lists. Add colons, bullet points and full stops. Drop any words you don't need.

1) The garden shed contains tools, plant pots, compost, fertilizer, bulbs and

INTRODUCTION

You're going to write about Halloween Holiday.

Your assignment is to gather detailed information about this holiday and to present it to

the rest of the class.

In five groups of 4 students, you are to work together to research your topic. You must use at
least four different sources to find information.

Do not just copy the words from the website, but write the information using your own words. You will need to write down the websites you use for reference in your final project.

PLAGIARIZING IN COMPLETELY ILLEGAL!

Each group will write about one of the following topics:

1) Introduce Halloween Holiday and describe the history of it ( what country it comes from, how it came about, etc.)

2) Describe some common customs of the holiday, such as typical food eaten, the type of dress worn, etc.

3) Describe any other special activities that are done during this holiday (celebrations, music,
etc.)

4) Tell why this holiday is important and how it is celebrated differently in modern times than
in the past. Also, talk about which countries celebrate this holiday today.

5) Look for some typical Halloween recipes on the web and cook some of them to the rest of the class.

It's necessary to make a POSTER or do a POWERPOINT PRESENTATION with your information.

You will use this visual aid when you present your project to the class. During the presentation
everybody must talk. You can include video clips and music if you wish to do so. Be creative!

If you do a POWERPOINT PRESENTATION, you must make a poster as well.

You need to hand in a paper with all the information gathered and the webpages used.

Everybody will make a Halloween mask to wear the final day.

The class is to be divides into 5 groups of 4 students and each group will research information about the holiday.

They can't copy and paste from the web.

At the end we'll do a presentation in the class and each group will speak about their infomation
using the poster or the POWERPOINT PRESENTATION. We'll talk about this important holiday and we eat the food that had been prepared.

Everybody will wear a Halloween mask.
